Feature: Ernest Williamson III Day 3
Spilled Mattering
there are woven gray tapestries
aligned with malt and insecurity
amongst the collective banter
breathing upon me
I've survived the shackles
the inveterate
blood
posing
on the ground
before and after the election
of Obama
poetry
left in a ruddy cup of purity
is a lie
a festering boil
posing
as a balm
blanched
like a confused
Afro
or like a budding beard
reaching for sunlight
a warmth
a cover
to mast the trading
sins
lingering
in the bow of a careless
ship
be it Amistad
or in the ignored
souls
swimming above
and beneath
fettered
ground.

Q&A
Q: How does music influence your art/writing?
A: It doesn’t influence my visual art or poetry. Music is a whole other world for me. My creative endeavors are like separate rooms to a house.
Q: What makes you passionate about teaching?
A: I am an English Professor and I love my students more... so when they show signs of progress during a semester and beyond.

The poem and the drawing together are the pain of a lost soul (or more) searching for something beyond the darkness, reaching for the light that is there, but maybe just beyond reach. Both touch me in the way of knowing, experientially. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI really loved reading this piece. The last part especially resonated a lot to me...!
