Feature: Jim Benz Day 3

12 lazy haiku

rising at dawn --
we can't even subdue
one mosquito

***

cloud of gnats
down by the outhouse --
choke cherry blossoms

***

morning fire --
listening to wrens
while the coffee boils

***

down in the reeds
where we hid the canoe --
a noisy beaver

***

like old times --
grouse in the aspen grove
drumming on logs

***

a mindless task --
watching dragonflies mate
on the wood pile

***

cloudburst --
squishing toes in the mud
as we bathe

***

rainy afternoon --
rethinking the day
over backgammon

***

lost in the woods --
craning our necks
to the sunset

***

wet socks --
spending every match
on a single fire

***

spring ritual --
naked in the firelight
killing ticks

***

late night swim --
drowning in my whiskey cup
two mosquitos
